In this video, Dr. McLaughlin explains Chiari malformation. Learn more about this often misunderstood and misdiagnosed condition.

What is a Chiari Malformation?

Chiari malformation is usually a congenital brain malformation which is characterized by impaired CSF circulation through the foramen magnum. The coordination center of the brain- called the cerebellum sinks below the opening of the skull- disrupting the normal fluid pathways leading to a buildup of Cerebro Spinal Fluid (CSF), resulting in headaches. This fluid buildup can also occur in the spinal cord and is then known as syringomyelia.
