Mark R. McLaughlin, MD, FACS, FAANS
Chiari malformation is challenging to the patient, and a full understanding of available treatment options is critical. Dr. McLaughlin discusses available treatments for Chiari malformation.
Treatment options for Chiari malformation
Treatment for Chiari malformation is individualized. Patients that have had stable symptoms for years who are recently diagnosed can be considered for observation. Patients that have no symptoms from their Chiari malformations often can be observed. If a patient presents with a new symptom and is diagnosed with Chiari malformation, often surgery is recommended because there is some evidence that patients respond best if they are operated on within two years of the onset of symptoms.
