What Causes a Herniated Disc?

Shah Scrubs SmallNirav Shah MD

There is more than one possible cause for a disc herniation In this video, Dr. Nirav Shah explains how a herniated disc happens, and what symptoms you might notice.

The risk factors that can contribute to the chance of a disc herniation include:

  • Aging: As we get older, discs gradually dry and lose their strength and resiliency.
  • Lifestyle Choices: Lack of regular exercise, not eating a well balanced diet, being overweight or smoking can substantially contribute to poor disc health.
  • Poor Posture
  • Incorrect or Repetitive Lifting or Twisting can place additional stress on the lumbar spine.
